Tigray rebels announce exit from Ethiopia’s Amhara region

Hanna Temuari

Tigrayan forces say they have withdrawn from territories in Ethiopia’s Amhara region that they had occupied for more than a month amid the ongoing civil war in the north of Ethiopia.

In a statement read on regional TV, the Tigrayans said they re-considered deployments as there was a need to change position to “effectively” combat the joint force of the Ethiopian federal army and its Eritrean ally.

The Ethiopian government has not commented yet.

Fresh fighting between Tigray forces and federal troops started at the end of August in northern Ethiopia ending a five-month truce.

Despite growing calls for de-escalation, fighting continues to be reported.
