Suicide bombs hit town in central Somalia

Abdi Dahir

Two suicide bombs have hit the central Somali town of Beledweyne, causing an unspecified number of casualties, state TV has reported.

Governor Ali Jeyte is quoted as confirming the attacks.

It added that there are “unspecified casualties” and security forces were at the scene of the blast to conduct an investigation

The TV report did not provide further details and there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks.

However, the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabab group carries out regular bombings across Somalia.

The latest blasts come at a time when government forces and allied clan-based militias are conducting an offensive against al-Shabab in Hiiraan region.
