Hirshabeelle Organizes an Exemplar Election Unlike Jubbaland and Puntland

Jowhar (WDN) – Hirshabeelle’s Parliament has opened to listen to presentations by candidates for the Federal Upper House of Parliament. The president of the State, Ali Abdullahi Guudlaawe, has officially released on 8 September 2021 the list of 33 candidates competing for the State’s 8 seats in the Federal Upper House of Parliament.

The list includes those sitting in the current Parliament and those vying to take their places. 27 of these candidates have in person registered their candidacy, followed by their participation in the oral presentations which commenced on 14 September 2021.

President Guudlaawe has handled the selection process in an exemplar transparent and proper manner consonant with the established procedures. This has rightly earned the State all round plaudits, a glaring contrast to that sham election which took place in Puntland and Jubbaland, where corruption and nepotism in total disregard of the nationally agreed electoral process, was the orders of the day.

What many people found difficult to comprehend is how the leaders of Puntland and Jubbaland, Mr. Madoobe and Said Deni who were in the past the most outspoken critics of President Farmaajo for circumventing the constitution in order to ensure that candidates supportive for his presidential re-election were elected by federal member States, could themselves do worse and openly flout the agreed election procedures and get away with it.

The overall picture that emerges is the gaping differences in the ways the selection of MPs for the Upper House were conducted in different States. Whereas in Hirshabeelle members were selected in accordance with the agreed procedures and respect for the rights of the candidates, the opposite was the case in Jubbaland and Puntland States.

The lesson for the nation for the future is the choice between the exemplary standards left by the President of Hirshabeelle, the youngest state established in Somalia’s Federal Member States and the open corruption and nepotism left by the presidents of Puntland, the head of the oldest State that claims the mother of Somalia’s federalism system and Jubbaland, its newly found subservient darling!
