Mogadishu (WDN)- Somalia missed the opportunity to run for the position of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, a candidacy sought by Fosiya Haji Adan Yusuf. Congresswoman Fosiya, who served as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia from November 4, 2012, to January 17, 2014, faced a critical lack of support from the Somali government, particularly from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

Despite her vigorous campaign and significant backing from the Islamic world, numerous African countries, and the Arab world, Fosiya could not secure the endorsement from her own country.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud openly discouraged Fosiya from pursuing her candidacy, a stance that proved detrimental as support from the candidate’s home country is essential in the race for the head of the African Union Commission.
Fosiya, when contacted by WardheerNews, expressed her disappointment that the deadline for submitting candidacy documents, which was August 6, had passed. The African Union Commission has set August 6, 2024 as the deadline for the submission of applications by candidates interested in succeeding the current chairman.
She attributed her failure to meet the deadline to the lack of support from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, clarifying that she did not voluntarily withdraw but was forced to miss the deadline due to the absence of governmental backing.
