Doha: Expat woman jailed for duping taxi driver

Doha Criminal Court has sentenced a Somali woman to one year in jail and subsequent deportation for impersonating a police officer and forcibly taking money from a taxi driver working with a private franchisee.

Local Arabic daily Arrayah reported that the victim had stopped his taxi in Doha’s Al Sadd area for the defendant as he felt she needed a ride.

The woman got into the car and claimed to be a police offer working at the Madinat Khalifa Traffic Department. She asked the driver to show his ID, driving licence and vehicle registration. However, he could produce only  his ID and told her that the vehicle registration card was at the company’s office.

She then asked him to drive to the Al Rayyan Traffic Department. When they arrived there, she asked him for a sum of QR6,000 but he told her he did not have so much cash. Eventually, she took all the cash he had, which amounted to QR400, and asked him to drive her to another area.

The police later arrested the defendant and she admitted to her guilt. The court convicted her based on the confession and the testimony in the case.
