SOUTHWEST STATE ELECTION: FGS Hijacked SW Election Process

Press Release

The SW election process was tainted and stalled by the destructive interference of the Federal Government. AS a result, the resignation of more than half of members of the election committee including the chairman, his deputy and secretariat followed by the abrupt resignation of the SW President has thrown the SW election into disarray.

The prevailing circumstances are tense to hold the election, Thus, we have called upon the SW interim leadership to consider postponing the election in order to create conducive political climate. Members of international community including the UN and IGAD as well as traditional elders and federal MPs, echoed our call and understood our position.

We have also called the SW parliament to fill vacancies of the electoral committee who resigned on 5/11/2018 instead of creating a new committee. The announcement by the interim speaker to unilaterally announce the establishment of fresh committee and unrealistic election timetable without consultation with stakeholders makes the integrity of the election process illegitimate in the eyes of SWS citizens and elsewhere in the nation. The announced timeline will not allow to establish inclusive election committee, provide adequate training and establishing election integrity committee. T

he detrimental interference of FGS still going on and it is now hijacked the entire election process. Since 7/11/18, the State Minister of Ministry of Interior and Reconciliation of FGS and his team is in Baidoa. Contrary to the constitutional and democratic principles, he is dictating the election process behind the scene.
