Bosaso (WDN) – Puntland is currently confronting a significant security challenge due to the presence of ISIS (Islamic State) elements in the East Mountain (Bari region). These extremist groups have exploited the area’s rugged terrain and limited government presence to carry out attacks, recruit locals, and destabilize the region, threatening the safety and stability of local communities.
In response, the Puntland government, is implementing military operations, intelligence efforts, and community engagement initiatives to counter the threat. President Said Deni of Puntland delivered a speech Jan 30 at an event in Bosaso, marking the launch of the second phase of the anti-terrorism campaign. He provided an update on the ongoing conflict between Puntland forces and ISIS militants in the Calmiskaad mountains of the Bari region.
In his address, President Said Abdullahi Deni reported that Puntland forces had successfully completed the first phase of the anti-ISIS operation in the Calmiskaad mountains. The operation forced ISIS militants out of their strongholds, including caves and fortified positions, and thwarted all their attempts to resist the Puntland forces.
The president praised the military for their efforts and announced that the second phase of the operation would begin soon. He emphasized that this phase would likely take less time than the first.
“You can be confident, the people of Puntland, that our forces are more than capable of defending the nation and its citizens. Puntland is fully committed to the second phase of the campaign, and we will continue the fight against terrorism by land, sea, and air. Let it be clear: those who do not surrender will either be eliminated or taken as prisoners of war. No more opportunities will be offered,” President Deni declared.

He also urged the people of Puntland to continue supporting the government, reinforcing unity, and expressed particular gratitude to women for their role in supporting the military. He acknowledged their significant contribution to the fight against ISIS.
Additionally, President Deni, while in Bosaso, issued a peace appeal regarding the clan conflict in the Ceerigaabo district, the capital of the Sanaag region. In his remarks, the president addressed the ongoing clan tensions in Ceerigaabo, stressing that “Ceerigaabo is a town shared by both Puntland and Somaliland, and for the past 30 years, a peace agreement has been in place, respected by both Puntland and Somaliland.”
President Deni urged Somaliland officials to reassess the situation, saying, “We aim to resolve these conflicts.”
Furthermore, President Deni called for peace and fraternity to end the clan-based conflict in western Mudug, emphasizing the need to halt all clan-driven battles throughout Somalia.
