Garowe (WDN)- The President of Puntland, Said Abdullahi Deni, delivered a significant address on Wednesday night at the state house dinner event attended by diverse segments of the Puntland community. During the speech, President Deni announced that the Puntland election is slated to occur on January 8. Additionally, he revealed that the election system would adhere to the traditional selection process of 66-member of parliament.

President Deni, who faced conflicts regarding the 2024 democratization electoral process, leading to violent clashes in Garowe in June 2023 with the opposition, has been resistant to numerous suggestions and mediations, sticking to an election based on one-person- one vote. However, his tonight’s speech, accepting the traditional 66 tribal selection system, has garnered positive reactions from many quarters.
It is widely believed that this move by President Deni will potentially avert war and political turmoil between his administration and the opposition in Puntland. Numerous mediators representing different factions of Puntland and the Somali people exerted pressure on President Deni to consider various proposals and recommendations, striving to find a middle ground.
The election of the Puntland Parliament is scheduled for January 8, and it is anticipated that the government formed through the traditional system involving 66 MPs will pave the way for the establishment of a new government, ultimately completing the democratic framework for one -person -one -vote (1p1v) within its new five year term.
