Heavy gunfire rent the air in Wajir South after al-Shabaab militia attacked a local police station allegedly on a revenge mission.
The heavily armed gunmen stormed Dadajabula Police Station equipped with sophisticated artillery, including rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and sprayed the bullets in the air killing two suspects who were in custody.
According to a police report released Habaswein Police Station, the assailants struck at around 8pm on Tuesday, October 29, when it was raining and the attackers were heard shouting in Somali language.
“It was reported by PC Simon Areba that while they were on guard and at the time it was raining heavily, he heard gunshots from the left side of the post and the unknown number of attackers were shouting in Somali words which we could not understand,” read the statement in part
It took the intervention of KDF officers based at Dadajabula to help neutralise the attackers.
The officers attached at the police post responded to the shooting and engaged the attackers in a barrage of heavy gunfire that lasted for close to 20 minutes.
The report indicated the officers called for reinforcement from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) based at Dadajabula in a bid to quell the insurgency.
When the guns fell silent, the gangsters had reportedly killed two suspects who were being held in custody.
It is believed the militia group was on a mission to rescue two of their members who were arrested and locked up at the station.
