The U.S. Muslim boy arrested after a teacher mistook his homemade clock for a bomb will meet with Turkey’s prime minister on Friday, the boy’s father has said.
Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed told Anadolu Agency that the family received an invitation from the Turken Foundation to participate in a dinner Friday evening that will also be attended by the Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, who is visiting New York for the 70th UN General Assembly.
“We send our gratitudes to President [Recep Tayyip] Erdogan and his prime minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, and the Turken Foundation for supporting us. They are inviting us to meet them. We will be there, inshallah”, the father said.
The Sudanese Muslim teen made international headlines last week when he was handcuffed, arrested and fingerprinted by police after a homemade clock he brought to the school was mistaken for a bomb.
The incident took place at a time when a rising wave of Islamophobia has exacerbated the debate around religious freedoms across the U.S.
“We are Muslims. We have to share the pain for each other. We really would like to ask Allah to bless the Turkish people. We hope to get together on Sept. 25 in New York”, Ahmed’s father said.
Turken Foundation formed in 2014 by Turkey’s two major civil society groups, Ensar Foundation and TURGEV.
The New York City-based organization assists students by means of scholarship, accommodation and other cultural programs in order to improve their education process in the U.S.
