The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has declared that it would finally implement the constitution by introducing new currency designs that would bear no portraits or images of individuals.
The bank is set to divulge more details of the new currency come next week at a press conference on the matter.
“There will be a press conference next week and an update on this will be provided,” said CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge.
According the Constitution, the new design was supposed to have been implemented by September 1, 2015. This could mean that the currency design in circulation at the moment is illegal.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Henry Rotich affirmed to Kenyans last week that the launch of the currency was nearing completion.
The currency which will be in notes of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 Shillings, will have different designs approved from themes which reflect Kenya’s History, the country’s prosperity and an aspect of the vision 2030.
CBK confirmed that money already in circulation would be withdrawn in phases as those with the new designs introduced.
