Ministerial Meeting of African Trade Bloc Opened in Djibouti

Addis Ababa, (Prensa Latina) The forty-sixth session of the Council of Ministers of the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD) opened Tuesday in Djibouti in the presence of representatives of all the members of that African organization.

As a delegate of the country presiding over the trade bloc, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Workneh Gebeyehu travelled to that country to chair the meeting, which is scheduled to conclude Wednesday.

Participants will agree on the strategies to be implemented to modify IGAD’s working system to adapt them to the demands and dynamics of the economies of the member countries, Ethiopian Foreign Ministry said.

Although it is not on the session agenda, some specialists predict there will be a debate about possible diplomatic actions to eliminate insecurity in Southern Sudan, despite the peace agreement signed in that nation last October.

IGAD, founded in 1996 to replace the Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development, has its main headquarters in Djibouti and is composed of this nation plus Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Southern Sudan and Uganda.
