Kenya: Funding of Miraa task force halted

Nairobi – The High Court yesterday suspended the funding of a task force set up by the government to oversee the Miraa industry.

Justice George Odunga issued orders restraining the Agriculture ministry from releasing funds to the 10-member team pending the determination of a suit filed by the Kenya Miraa Farmers and Traders Association.

Kemifata argues the appointment of the task force was political as members from the miraa growing community were not consulted.

The court heard that taxpayers will lose Sh600 million if the ministry funds the “illegal” task force.

Kemifata chairman Dave Muthuri said none of the appointees is a Miraa farmer.

The case will be mentioned on June 16
