A marauding El Merreikh side found their groove in the ongoing CECAFA Kagame Cup games after thrashing Banadir 4-0 in a one sided match played at Nyamirambo stadium in Kigali starting 1400 hours.
Allan Wanga, Ahmed El Basha, Malian Mohamed Traore and Serge Wawa all scoring to spearhead the Sudanese giant comeback to the competition after their opening shock defeat to Rwanda ‘s Police.
The Sudanese were however spared an early scare also after Banadir’s Abdi Noor’s shot on target was stopped by keeper Salim Magoola.
Wanga was presented with goal chances early in the 12th minute as he picked up good pass from inside the box but keeper Patrick Gichob stopped him from the shot . Moments later, the striker failed again to find the net from a lapse by the Banadir defence.
Wanga’s Redemption
The 18th minute however came as a redemption for the Kenyan as his long range low volley beat Banadir keeper to nestle in the far bottom corner of the net for the Sudanese side opener.
El Merreikh doubled the lead on the 33rd minute after good display from the left wing saw Ahmed El Basha finishing off a Mohamed Bakit’s cut- in cross.
Wanga had his 45th minute effort coming off the crossbar after finishing Merreikh’s brilliant display upfront with a clever chip that beat Banadir’s keeper Gichob.
Traore’s flick
Efforts by Banadir to push for match opener in the second half were dealt a blow in the 61st minute when Malian import Mohamed Traore’s flick from a corner kick ended with the ball inside the banadir net to compound a tough afternoon for the Somali club.
The player was however denied a brace moments later after his goal was ruled offside by lines man but the Sudanese side were far from done grabbing their final goal through Serge Wadda who dipped the ball past Banadir’s defensive wall with five minutes to play.
Match implication
The loss was the second suffered by Banadir after their 5-1 humiliation by Vital O in the opening day.
