Farmaajo’s Machiavellian Agenda: A Deceptive Trip to Puntland for National Unity

By Dayib Sh. Ahmed

The Former Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, presidency commenced in 2017, has sparked a crisis of democratic governance in Somalia. Despite the constitutional limit of a four-year term, Farmaajo has controversially clung to power, extending his tenure beyond its mandate. This overreach has brought Somalia to the brink of plunging the country into civil strife and has elicited widespread condemnation from opposition parties, civil society groups, and the international community, all of whom have repeatedly called for timely and transparent elections to uphold Somalia’s democratic principles.

Former President Farmaajo visits Puntland, welcomed by President Deni.

As Somalia grapples with the consequences of Farmaajo’s autocratic regime, concerns over the erosion of democratic values have only heightened under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s leadership, who is not only following in the footsteps of Farmaajo regime, but emboldened by Farmaajo’s authoritarian practice. The specter of dictatorship looms large, casting a dark shadow over the country’s aspirations for progress, peace, and stability, and raising serious questions about its commitment to power-sharing and democratic governance.

President Farmaajo’s visit to Puntland is not a genuine effort to foster national unity but rather a calculated move to salvage his waning power and form an opportunistic opposition coalition, revealing his Machiavellian tactics at play. Far from being a beacon of empathy, Farmaajo’s outward display of concern for the opposition is a thinly veiled facade aimed at cloaking his self-serving ambitions in the guise of solidarity. His apparent empathy and crocodile tears are nothing more than calculated maneuvers to ensure his political survival, exposing the depths of his deceptive stratagems.

By attempting to forge alliances within the opposition, Farmaajo seeks to exploit existing divisions and sow discord for personal gain. His actions betray a ruthless determination to cling to power at any cost, even if it means disregarding foundational democratic principles and perpetuating political instability.

Despite Farmaajo’s attempts to portray his trip to Puntland, as a commitment to national unity and reconciliation, his true motivations lie in consolidating his fading authority through manipulation and deceit. His actions serve as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unchecked power and the erosion of democratic values.

It is imperative for Somalis to see through Farmaajo’s deceitful schemes and reject his divisive agenda. Now more than ever, they must unite to defend their rights and demand accountability from those who seek to undermine them for selfish ends.  Let Farmaajo’s visit to Puntland serve as a sobering reminder to all who value freedom and justice. While his deceptive tactics may deceive some, they will not extinguish the enduring hope that resides within the hearts of the Somali people.

Acknowledging Farmaajo’s past actions, including the blockade of Jubaland, creating conflict and instability in Gedo region and the halting of development projects in Puntland during his tenure, reveals a pattern of self-serving behavior detrimental to the nation’s progress.

However, it’s essential to recognize that I’m not suggesting President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is excelling in governance. His administration has faced accusations of nepotism and cronyism, which undermine the legitimacy of government appointments and raise legitimate concerns on power sharing and fair resource allocation. While Farmaajo’s agenda is deceitful, the coalition between him and President Deni is driven purely by self-interest.

In contrast to Farmaajo’s deceptive agenda, President Mohamud’s administration’s shortcomings highlight the urgent need for genuine leadership committed to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law. Only by holding leaders accountable for their actions and upholding democratic values can Somalia chart a path towards a brighter and more inclusive future.

In conclusion, Farmaajo’s trip to Puntland, disguised as a gesture of national unity, lays bare the precarious state of Somali politics. His cynical maneuvers to salvage his grip on power and forge an opposition alliance expose the urgent need for vigilance and accountability.

Despite masquerading his self-serving agenda as a concern for national unity, Farmaajo brazenly disregards democratic principles and the will of the Somali people. He shamelessly exploits divisions and stokes discord within the opposition ranks to claw back power, imperiling the very foundation of Somalia’s democratic future.

Somalis must see through Farmaajo’s deceptive machinations and vehemently reject his divisive agenda. The time has come to unite, fiercely defend their rights, and demand unwavering accountability from those who shamelessly undermine them for personal gain. By steadfastly resisting hollow promises and superficial gestures, the Somali people can reclaim control of their destiny and carve out a path toward genuine progress and self-determination.

While acknowledging Farmaajo’s egregious past transgressions, it’s crucial to confront the shortcomings of President Mohamud’s administration. Accusations of nepotism and cronyism cast a dark shadow over government appointments and resource allocation, raising legitimate concerns.

In stark contrast to Farmaajo’s underhanded tactics, President Mohamud’s failings underscore the pressing need for authentic leadership committed to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law. By fiercely holding leaders accountable and steadfastly upholding democratic values, Somalia can wrest back control of its future and navigate towards a brighter, more inclusive tomorrow, liberated from the clutches of political manipulation.

In the face of Farmaajo’s treachery, the Somali people must stand steadfast, refusing to be swayed by false promises and empty gestures. They must reclaim their rightful role as architects of their destiny, casting off the chains of tyranny and embracing the spirit of self-determination. International actors must also play a proactive role in supporting Somalia’s democratic aspirations, standing in solidarity with those advocating for transparent and inclusive governance.

The lessons learned from Farmaajo’s tenure serve as a stark warning against repeating the mistakes of the past, urging vigilance in safeguarding Somalia’s democratic institutions and principles. In light of these challenges, the Somali people find themselves at a critical juncture, tasked with against the encroachment of authoritarianism, defending the principles of democracy, power and resource sharing. However, Somalia’s rich history of resilience offers a glimmer of hope. By embracing the power of unity and democratic values, the Somali people can overcome these challenges and build a stronger, more just nation.
