Deni Draws the Line: Puntland Targets Kidnappers and Clan Violence in Mudug

Garowo (WDN) – President Said Abdullahi Deni has moved decisively to confront the worsening security crisis in Mudug Region, signaling a renewed commitment to restoring order and reasserting state authority.

According to regional officials, the president has spent consecutive nights in high-level consultations with Puntland leaders from Mudug—ministers, lawmakers, and security figures—culminating in clear directives to urgently stabilize the region.

Governor Abdiweli Jibril Bayle confirmed that large deployments of security forces are being mobilized, including police reinforcements and rapid-response units, as part of a broader strategy to contain escalating violence.

The intervention comes amid a sharp rise in kidnappings, targeted killings, and recurring clan clashes that have strained public confidence and disrupted daily life. Officials say the new security push is not merely reactive but part of a wider effort to dismantle the networks behind abductions and prevent cycles of retaliatory violence.

President Deni has increasingly come under criticism for presiding over a period marked by declining security conditions and stalled development progress in Puntland.
Despite earlier expectations of stability and reform, his administration has struggled to contain rising insecurity, including persistent threats from militant groups and localized conflicts that continue to undermine public safety.

At the same time, concerns have mounted over the slow pace—or in some cases regression—of key development initiatives. Infrastructure projects have lagged, economic opportunities remain limited, and public services have shown little meaningful improvement. Observers contend that these challenges point not only to structural constraints but also to shortcomings in governance, prioritization, and policy execution under Deni’s leadership.

According to those close to the discussions, is unambiguous: insecurity in Mudug will no longer be tolerated. The focus now is on restoring law and order, protecting civilians, and addressing the root causes of conflict—particularly the intersection of criminal activity and clan-based tensions that have long destabilized the region.

With deployments underway and political backing consolidated, Puntland’s leadership appears intent on shifting from containment to enforcement—testing whether a sustained, coordinated response can finally reverse the region’s troubling security trajectory.
