A terror suspect of Somali origin who was acquitted of terror charges was on Monday re-arrested in Mombasa and flown to Nairobi for interrogation.

Detectives from the Anti-Terror Police Unit and the General Service Unit on Monday arrested Alweys Omar at his Likoni home and took him to the ATPU Mobasa office under tight security.

Omar was earlier this year cleared of terrorism related charges alongside another suspect Issa Matan. Chief magistrate Stephen Riech directed the two to report to the county CID boss once every two weeks and should not leave the country for a month.

The two were freed on January 3rd after Police officer Philip Tuwei told the court that Omar and Matan are in the country legally and are not in any way connected to terrorism.

The bank accounts of the suspects were also scrutinised but detectives found nothing related with terrorism activities. The investigating officer told the court on January 3 that Matan is a refugee and has a refugee certificate that will expire in 2019.

A source who sought anonymity told the Star that the suspect is being flown to Nairobi for further interrogations.

“This was a command from above and the suspect is wanted in Nairobi,” the source said.

Mombasa county police boss Robert Kitur told the Star that he has not been informed about the arrest

“I have not been briefed about the arrest,” Kitur said.
