Somaliland Claims Politicians Holding Secret Talks with Mogadishu as Internal Divisions Surface

Hargeisa (WDN) – Somaliland’s Presidency Minister, Khadar Hussein Abdi, has alleged that a number of prominent Somaliland politicians are engaged in undisclosed negotiations with Somalia’s Federal Government in Nairobi, accusing them of attempting to undermine Somaliland’s long-standing political position.

Speaking during Somaliland’s Judiciary Conference, the minister said the government was fully aware of the meetings and suggested they reflected growing political divisions within Somaliland over its future relations with Mogadishu.

“Today we know of senior Somaliland politicians who traveled to Nairobi, met with officials from Somalia, and essentially told them, ‘We have weakened this administration’s position—what do you have for us?'” Khadar said.

Although he stopped short of naming those involved, his remarks amount to one of the strongest public acknowledgments yet that contacts may be taking place between Somaliland political figures and the Federal Government behind closed doors.

The allegations come amid the long-running political dispute between Somaliland and Mogadishu over Somaliland’s claim to independence. While Hargeisa has consistently rejected negotiations that could be interpreted as compromising its sovereignty, the minister’s comments suggest concerns within the Somaliland administration that some political actors may be pursuing alternative channels of engagement.

Political observers say the accusations also expose apparent unease within Somaliland’s leadership over internal dissent, as officials increasingly warn of behind-the-scenes contacts with Mogadishu at a time of heightened political sensitivity.

Neither Somalia’s Federal Government nor the politicians allegedly involved in the Nairobi meetings had issued an official response to the minister’s claims at the time of publication.

If confirmed, the reported discussions would underscore the increasingly complex political landscape surrounding Somaliland, where questions over future engagement with Mogadishu continue to generate both public debate and private diplomacy.
