Friends say he was distraught after refused amnesty

Florence,  A 31-year-old man from Somalia who committed suicide in Florence on Thursday had recently been refused asylum by Italian authorities, the city’s head of the Somalian community, Osman Gaal, said.

Witnesses said that the man living in a northern neighborhood of the Tuscan capital threw himself from a high window into the courtyard of the building where he was living.

“He had lost his mind, was talking to himself and could not sleep,” witnesses who lived in the same building said.
