Somali Parliament Moves to Dismiss Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre Amid Growing Dissatisfaction

Mogadishu (WDN)- In a significant development within the Somali political landscape, members of the House of the People in the Federal Parliament of Somalia (FPS) recently held a meeting in Nairobi, where they signed a motion calling for the dismissal of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. This motion, which is gaining substantial traction, is expected to secure the signatures of approximately 100 MPs, signaling a growing movement for change in the Somali Federal Government (SFG) cabinet.

With the parliamentary session set to begin on February 6, the motion’s momentum is clear, and it is anticipated that over 100 MPs will support it. This reflects a deepening dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Hamza’s leadership and the general direction of the SFG. The development highlights the increasing instability within the Somali government and the growing divisions among lawmakers.

Sources indicate that tensions between President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza have been escalating, particularly following President Ahmed Madobe’s visit to Nairobi, where he met with Kenyan authorities. In response, Prime Minister Hamza allegedly proposed cutting diplomatic ties with Kenya and banning khat imports from the neighboring country. This proposal reportedly sparked strong opposition from President Hassan, who is said to benefit from the khat trade. The clash between the two leaders has contributed to the growing discontent within the parliament.

However, political observers argue that removing Prime Minister Hamza may not be in President Hassan’s best interest. Any new Prime Minister appointed to replace Hamza is unlikely to be a compliant figure. Instead, they will likely challenge the status quo, especially regarding the president’s controversial policies and corruption allegations. With President Hassan’s term nearing its conclusion, a new Prime Minister could become a significant obstacle, publicly confronting the president’s failures and growing unpopularity. In this sense, President Hassan may find that replacing Hamza is not a clear path to political stability, but rather another challenge to his authority.

This power struggle within the Somali government reflects the deepening divides and growing frustrations with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s leadership, as the country continues to grapple with political instability and public discontent.
