Kigali (WDN) – Rwanda has received another group of vulnerable asylum seekers evacuated from Libya, through the Emergency Transit Mechanism (ETM), an initiative panned to offer a renewed opportunity to hundreds of people who had become trapped in one of the world’s most dangerous migration corridors.
The latest group, consisting of 173 asylum seekers, arrived in Rwanda under a humanitarian transit mechanism supported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and African Union. The initiative is designed to provide temporary protection and safety to migrants and refugees stranded in Libya while long-term solutions are sought for their future.
According to Rwanda’s Ministry in charge of Emergency Management, the new arrivals include 12 South Sudanese nationals, while the remainder come from Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia, and Ethiopia—countries that have been affected by conflict, political instability, economic hardship, or humanitarian crises.
For years, Rwanda has worked closely with UNHCR and international partners to receive and shelter asylum seekers evacuated from Libya, providing them with a secure environment after enduring often harrowing journeys marked by uncertainty, violence, and displacement.
The humanitarian transit program was established to rescue vulnerable migrants and refugees stranded in Libya, where many face severe hardships, including insecurity, exploitation, detention, and limited access to basic services. For countless individuals, evacuation represents the first step away from danger and toward the possibility of rebuilding their lives.
Rwanda’s continued participation in the initiative has earned international recognition as a rare example of an African-led humanitarian response to one of the continent’s most complex migration challenges. The arrival of the latest group also serves as a reminder of the human cost of irregular migration across the Mediterranean.
Every year, hundreds of migrants attempting to reach Europe lose their lives in the waters separating Libya and Italy. Many are persuaded by human traffickers to undertake perilous sea journeys aboard overcrowded and often unseaworthy vessels. The route remains one of the deadliest migration corridors in the world, claiming countless lives in search of safety, opportunity, and a better future.
For the 173 individuals who arrived in Kigali this week, however, the journey has taken a different turn. After months—and in some cases years—of uncertainty, they now find themselves in a place of temporary refuge, where the immediate threat of violence and exploitation has been replaced by the hope of protection and a chance to begin again.
While durable solutions remain to be found, Rwanda’s latest humanitarian gesture underscores the continuing importance of international cooperation in addressing one of the world’s most pressing refugee and migration crises.
