President Hassan Sheikh Arrives in Las Anod for Historic Northeastern State Inauguration

Lasanod(WDN)_ President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived today in Las Anod, the capital of Somalia’s Northeastern Regional State, to take part in the official inauguration of the new federal member state and the swearing-in of its president, Abdikhadir Ahmed Aw-Ali (Firdhiye). The visit marks a significant political moment for a region that has been at the center of prolonged conflict and competing territorial claims.

Since the formal establishment of the Northeastern State and the election of President Firdhiye on August 30, 2024, President Hassan had been expected to visit Las Anod. That visit was delayed amid unresolved issues surrounding prisoners captured during the Las Anod fighting, with the president insisting that their release coincide with his arrival as a confidence-building measure.

Amid deep political instability and geopolitical conflict in the region during President Hassan’s second term, his presence in Las Anod is widely viewed as an attempt to project national unity at a time when Somalia continues to grapple with fragmentation and weakened unity, challenges that have persisted since the collapse of the central government in 1991. Many see the visit as an opportunity to reinforce Somali unity and heal long-standing divisions.

Somalis regard the Northeastern State as a powerful symbol of Somali unity and self-determination. However, its formation has drawn strong opposition from both Somaliland and Puntland, which separately lay claim to the Sool and Sanaag regions, underscoring the enduring complexity and sensitivity of Somalia’s federal and territorial disputes.
