Opposition Talks Advance as Nabad & Nolol and Future Council Seek Common Election Position

Mogadishu (WDN) — Discussions between the Nabad & Nolol political bloc and the Future Council are making cautious progress, with the two opposition groupings reportedly reaching agreement on one key issue, while another remains under discussion and Nabad & Nolol has attached a condition to a proposed joint initiative.

According to information obtained by WardheerNews through reports on Somali Media, a delegation from the Future Council visited the residence of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed “Farmaajo” on Thursday night. The delegation included former Galmudug President Abdikarim Hussein Guled, former NISA Director Abdullahi Sanbalashe, and MP Geele, all members of the Future Council. MP Abdishakur Mire also attended the meeting alongside Farmaajo.

The delegation reportedly conveyed a message from senior Future Council leaders, calling for the opposition to harmonize its positions on the upcoming elections and the political transition period. The initiative appears aimed at preventing President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud from exploiting divisions within the opposition to extend or strengthen his political position.

Farmaajo welcomed the proposal, according to sources familiar with the discussions, and expressed support for developing a unified opposition position. He also emphasized that his political stance was not driven by personal hostility toward any particular individual.

Following the meeting, the Future Council reportedly proposed that Nabad & Nolol and the Future Council jointly determine the membership of a proposed technical task force tasked with advancing discussions on the electoral and transitional arrangements.

Nabad & Nolol is said to have accepted the proposal in principle, but attached a condition that the task force membership be divided equally on a 50–50 basis between the two opposition blocs.

While this issue appears to have moved closer to agreement, a broader and potentially more consequential question remains under discussion: whether all opposition forces can agree on a single electoral model.

Sources say efforts are continuing to determine whether the wider opposition can present a common position on the type of election Somalia should hold, an issue that has become one of the central fault lines in the country’s ongoing political crisis.

Farmaajo and Sharif Hold Separate Meeting

Meanwhile, former Presidents Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmaajo and Sharif Sheikh Ahmed held a meeting on Tuesday at the headquarters of the Himilo Qaran political organization.

The two former presidents reportedly agreed on the need to increase political pressure on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to accept an inclusive electoral agreement involving all major political stakeholders.

The meeting comes as opposition groups attempt to consolidate their positions amid continuing uncertainty over Somalia’s electoral roadmap and the country’s broader political transition.

The ongoing dialogue between Nabad & Nolol and the Future Council is reportedly being coordinated by former minister Cabdirahman Dheere, who has been tasked with organizing the meetings between the two opposition camps.

The emerging discussions could mark an important step toward overcoming divisions among Somalia’s opposition groups. However, major differences remain, particularly over the electoral model, the composition of the proposed technical task force, and the broader terms of any political agreement with the Federal Government.

If the opposition succeeds in reaching a unified position, it could significantly alter the political balance ahead of the next electoral phase. Conversely, continued disagreement could provide the Federal Government with greater room to maneuver as the political contest over elections and the transition intensifies.
