Northeastern Lawmaker Resigns, Abandons Greater Somalia Vision, Declares Support for Somaliland

Addis Ababa/Garowe (WDN) – In a dramatic political reversal that has sent shockwaves through Somali politics, MP Fahima Yusuf Abdillahi (Quuje), one of the most prominent figures associated with the Northeastern Administration, has announced her resignation from parliament and publicly renounced her long-held support for the vision of a united Greater Somalia.

In a statement released on social media, Quuje confirmed that she had resigned both her parliamentary seat and her membership in the Northeastern Administration’s legislature, declaring that she had returned to what she described as “my homeland, Somaliland.”

“I also declare that I have abandoned the ideology of Greater Somalia and have returned to my nation, Somaliland,” she wrote.

The announcement marks a stunning shift for a politician who had long been regarded as one of the administration’s most influential public figures and an outspoken advocate during the political and military mobilization surrounding Las Anod.

A Remarkable Political Turnaround

In an accompanying interview, Quuje said her decision followed what she described as a deep reappraisal of Somalia’s political trajectory and the future of the community from which she comes. She argued that she had lost confidence in Somalia’s political leadership, saying she no longer believed anyone was genuinely working toward a unified Somali state.

“I realized that no one is sincerely working for the Somali national interest beyond my own family. I have abandoned the cause for which many young men lost their lives. Those who died are gone; those who remain deserve the chance to live,” she said.

Her remarks represent one of the most striking public defections by a senior political figure associated with the Northeastern Administration since its formation. Fahiima Quuje played a highly visible role during the political upheaval that followed the conflict in Las Anod, where she emerged as one of the administration’s leading political voices.

She was widely recognized for supporting efforts to establish the Northeastern Administration and for backing the military campaign against Somaliland forces during the fighting that engulfed the city.

MP Quuje’s abrupt departure from a cause she once stood at the forefront of continues to raise serious questions. Having been one of its most prominent defenders, her sudden change of position remains unexplained, with no substantive or credible account offered thus far to justify such a consequential decision.

Her decision to renounce those positions and openly align herself with Somaliland therefore represents a significant political reversal that is likely to generate intense debate among supporters and critics alike.

Expected Return to Hargeisa

According to reports, Quuje is currently in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and is expected to travel to Hargeisa in the coming days, where supporters are reportedly preparing to welcome her.

As of publication, the Northeastern Administration had not issued an official response to her resignation or to the political declarations contained in her statement. Analysts say Quuje’s resignation is likely to fuel renewed debate over political loyalties, regional identity, and the future of contested areas in northern Somalia.

Whether her move signals an isolated personal decision or the beginning of a broader political realignment remains unclear. What is certain, however, is that the resignation of one of the Northeastern Administration’s most recognizable political figures—and her public rejection of the Greater Somalia vision she once championed—has added another unexpected twist to an already complex and evolving political landscape.
