New defendant in Minn.’s missing Somalis case

MINNEAPOLIS — A new defendant is appearing in federal court in Minneapolis in the case of men who left Minnesota to fight in Somalia with the terror group al-Shabab.

Saynab Hussein is making her first appearance Thursday on one charge of perjury. An entry in the court docket indicates she plans to enter a plea.

In a charging document filed by prosecutors Wednesday, Hussein is accused of lying to a grand jury investigating the travels of Somali men from Minnesota to their homeland. Authorities say more than 20 men traveled to Somalia in what has been called one of the largest efforts to recruit U.S. fighters into a foreign terrorist group.

Prosecutors say Hussein helped raise money for the men and lied about it in 2009.
