New bilingual city news and history magazine launched

A new bilingual news and history magazine has been set up in an attempt to foster understanding between a city’s Somalis and other communities.

Quarterly magazine Kobciye has been launched in Bristol, and features articles in Somali which are also translated into English.

It is hoped English speakers and Somali families with Somali speaking parents and English speaking children will all be able to enjoy the magazine.

The title of the publication means “to increase knowledge” in Somali.

Editor-in-Chief Khaalid Ahmed told the Bristol Post: “It is about bridging the gap.

“We want to share the best of our culture and community with the rest of Bristol, that way we can better learn from each other.”

He added: “There is nothing bilingual like this out there, and so for the first time in some cases, families can sit down and enjoy reading something together that both the parents and children can read and understand.

“It will help parents in Somali communities make their families aware of their culture and their language but it will also help them learn a bit about Bristol and how things work here.”
