The US government will assist Kenya in securing its border with Somalia, following a request by Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, US Ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec said Tuesday (March 25th).

“We realise it is hard to secure the very long and difficult border stretch. We will ensure it is done and deal with the underlying problem of al-Shabaab in Somalia,” Godec said according to Kenya’s Daily Nation.
The United States will also assist Kenya in combating home-grown radicalisation and the consequent domestic terrorism threat. “We have an obligation to stand with Kenya and our commitment is to help overcome the challenge,” he said.
Godec said the US Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting Kenyan intelligence agencies to investigate terrorism cases, and urged the Kenyan government to pursue dialogue with discontented youth to head off radicalisation, in a reference to the recent mosque takeovers and killings in Mombasa. “It is time to bring those inclined [to be radicalised] closer by providing them with good education,” he said.
