National Assembly majority leader Aden Duale has said he will soon file a motion in parliament to ban politicians from speaking at funerals.

The Garissa Town MP asked Western and Nyanza leaders to desist from politicking at burials, saying the practice is rampant in the regions.

“It is unfortunate that this loophole has resulted in leaders engaging in physical fighting in front of mourners,” he said.

“I want all the county assemblies in the regions to discuss this motion so that we have soberness whenever we go to bury our loved ones. Busia is discussing the debate and other counties should emulate them.”

He spoke during a service and fundraiser by Ejinja Catholic Church in Matungu, Kakamega county, on Sunday.

Duale further asked church leaders to prevent political talk at funerals saying families need ample time to mourn their kin.

He called for tolerance between Muslims and Christians, whom he asked to collaborate in developing churches and mosques.

“I am in this harambee today as a Muslim because I want my Christian brothers and sisters to understand that a Muslim can play a role in development of the church and vice versa,” he said

Duale asked Kenyans to shun divisive politics and unite.

“We should be constructing bridges across the counties, constituencies and wards and not walls which will act as a barrier between us,” he said.

Regarding the ailing Mumias Sugar Company, the outspoken legislator said he will table a report in parliament this week on how those culpable can be arrested and losses recovered.

“We shall not move anywhere with this Mumias issue if it is left to be discussed at funerals. I want it to come to an end through legal process,” he said.
