Mogadishu (WDN) – Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has reportedly held online consultations with prominent traditional elders and clan leaders from Galmudug, urging them to safeguard the region’s stability amid growing political tensions surrounding its future leadership.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, Farmaajo expressed concern over what he described as attempts to influence Galmudug’s political future from outside the state, warning that such actions could undermine years of progress in reconciliation, state-building, and security.
The former president is said to have emphasized that the people of Galmudug should retain the exclusive right to determine their political leadership through a transparent and credible process, free from external pressure or political engineering. Sources indicate that both Farmaajo and the elders agreed on the importance of preserving peace and preventing any developments that could plunge the region into instability. They reportedly stressed that Galmudug’s leadership should emerge through a process accepted by local stakeholders rather than through decisions imposed from outside the state.
“A peaceful Galmudug benefits all Somalis,” Farmaajo reportedly told the elders during the consultations, underscoring the region’s strategic importance to national stability. The discussions also focused on ongoing reconciliation efforts among various communities within Galmudug. Farmaajo is said to have encouraged the elders to participate actively in any dialogue initiatives aimed at strengthening unity and preventing political divisions from escalating into broader conflict.
He further called on community leaders to reject what he described as narrow political interests that could jeopardize the region’s hard-won stability. According to participants in the meetings, the former president urged elders to place the interests of the people above short-term political gains and to resist attempts to turn Galmudug into an arena for external political battles.
Farmaajo reportedly appealed for patience, restraint, and compromise among all political actors, arguing that unresolved grievances should be addressed through dialogue rather than confrontation. He also urged communities to move beyond past disputes and focus on protecting peace, warning that political instability could trigger displacement, insecurity, and renewed conflict in a region that has worked for years to overcome internal divisions.
According to sources, Farmaajo maintained that the most effective way to preserve Galmudug’s stability is through a free, fair, and credible election process that enjoys broad acceptance among the region’s political stakeholders and residents. The reported consultations come at a time of rising political uncertainty in Galmudug, where disputes over the future leadership of the state have intensified amid allegations of political interference and competing power struggles.
With tensions mounting, many political observers view Galmudug as one of the most closely watched regions in Somalia. Decisions taken in the coming weeks could have significant implications not only for the future of the state itself but also for the broader relationship between Somalia’s Federal Government and its Federal Member States.
As political maneuvering accelerates, traditional elders are increasingly being viewed as critical actors whose influence could help determine whether Galmudug moves toward consensus and stability or becomes the latest battleground in Somalia’s continuing struggle over power, federalism, and political legitimacy.
