“I got my little girl in the car and went over to him to and asked ‘Are you all right mate?’.

“He looked really scared and the first thing he said to me was ‘finger prints’.

“He kept saying, ‘finger prints’ and held his hands out so I told him that the only place they take finger prints is the police station.

“He then pointed at the ground and asked ‘London?’. All the time he looked terrified.”

Iain, 37, called the police, who said they would send someone to collect the man as soon as they could.

“I nipped inside and got him a bottle of water and some crisps, which he looked really happy about,” Iain added.

“Then I told him to stay put and took my daughter to holiday club, but I kept thinking that I couldn’t leave him alone there, in the middle of the street.”

Iain, a self-employed exterior stonework specialist, went back to Bramble Grove and gave the man a lift to Stamford Police Station where officers were able to find out where he was from.

The man has been arrested on suspicion of illegal entry to the UK and is believed to have been dropped off from a vehicle travelling on the A1.

He was later taken to Grantham Police Station and his case will be dealt with by UK Visas and Immigration.
