Ethiopia to Hold Population and Housing Census in April

Addis Ababa, Feb 2 (Prensa Latina) The Ethiopian National Planning Commission announced on Saturday it will implement the fourth population and housing census in the country”s history starting April 7.

Everything is ready to carry out a clear and credible investigation, said the head of the Commission, Fitsum Assefa, during an interview with the accredited media in Addis Ababa.

He also said that the Global Positioning System, computers, tablets and all devices to facilitate census work are ready to obtain and process accurate and reliable information.

Assefa, however, did not specify how long the investigation would last, nor did he specify the date agreed to reveal the results.

About this, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said in several public speeches and meetings with opposition groups that the study will be held and disseminated months before the 2020 elections.

Last November, the government appointed an advisory council to prepare the first inquiry of its kind in more than a decade, an initiative considered an answer to ethnic self-determination demands.

Ethiopia, Africa’s second most populous nation, was reconfigured a quarter century ago as a federation to give autonomy to more than 80 ethnic groups.

Although the Constitution provides for at least one census every ten years, the third and last was in 2007, according to the National Planning Commission.
