Ethiopia election board ‘deregisters TPLF’

The electoral board in Ethiopia has deregistered the former ruling party of Tigray State, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), government-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) has reported.

It follows the party’s decision to defy a nationwide ban on elections and involvement in a conflict against federal troops.

TPFL leaders were ousted from power in November in a military operation.

“The board accused TPLF of engaging in armed violence,” Fana reports quoting a statement.

The electoral body has demanded an explanation from three other Tigray political parties that took part in TPLF-organised regional elections in September.

The parties are Asimba Democratic Party, National Congress of Great Tigray (Bitona) and Salsay Weyane Tigray, Fana reports.

The body also cancelled the registration of the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) party.
