Another Extremist Attack in Kenya: 9 Dead

The Somali militant group also claimed responsibility for the Sunday night attack in nearby Mpeketoni

(NAIROBI, Kenya) — A police official says extremists killed nine people overnight in the Kenyan coastal area where a swarm of attackers had also carried out a slaughter on Sunday night.

Police spokesman Masoud Mwinyi said Tuesday that al-Shabab militants attacked Majembeni village. The Somali militant group also claimed responsibility for the Sunday night attack in nearby Mpeketoni that killed 48 people.

Al-Shabab said the first attack was in revenge for Kenyan forces’ killings inside Somalia. The extremist group warned foreign tourists to stay out of Kenya.

The back-to-back attacks underscore the weak security around the Lamu area, which lies just south of the Somalia border. Lamu once attracted swarms of foreign visitors but its tourist sector has been suffering in recent years because of increasing violence.
