Bosasso, Somalia (WDN) — Bosasso, a strategically located port city on Somalia’s Gulf of Aden coast, occupies an increasingly important position in Red Sea–Gulf of Aden trade and commerce. Its proximity to one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors gives the port significant potential as a regional gateway for commercial shipping, trade, and investment, linking Somalia to markets across the Red Sea, Arabian Peninsula, and wider region.

The city is becoming increasingly strategically important as the war between Iran and the United States drags on. A Lebanese website closely associated with Hezbollah’s political and ideological outlook has drawn attention to the U.S. military facility in Somalia’s Puntland region, highlighting the growing strategic importance of Bossaso and the expanding security relationship between Washington and Puntland.

The website Al-Khanadeq, in a report published on August 26 under the title “Target Card,” focused on Bossaso’s location along the Gulf of Aden, its proximity to Yemen and its position near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a critical maritime chokepoint linking the Red Sea with the Indian Ocean. The report speculated that an expanded U.S. facility could support aerial operations, logistics and potentially future operations related to Yemen.

There is, however, no publicly available official evidence that the United States plans to use the Bossaso facility to launch attacks against Yemen. There is also no confirmed evidence that Hezbollah or the Houthis have decided to target the facility. The report nevertheless underscores the growing strategic importance of Bossaso at a time when security cooperation between the United States and Puntland is expanding.

A Strategic Location

Bossaso’s importance begins with geography. Its position on the Gulf of Aden places it close to Yemen and major international shipping routes leading toward the Bab al-Mandab and the Red Sea. That location gives the city value for maritime surveillance, intelligence, logistics and rapid security response.

The strategic environment has become more complicated because of instability in Yemen, threats to commercial shipping, arms trafficking and the continued presence of militant organizations on both sides of the Gulf of Aden.

For Washington, a capable presence in Bossaso provides access to an important regional security corridor. For Puntland, the partnership offers additional capabilities to confront threats within its territory and along its coastline. Puntland has said that U.S. military cooperation is focused particularly on the fight against ISIS-linked militants operating in the Cal Miskaad and Calmadow mountain areas.

An expanded U.S. presence could strengthen that campaign through intelligence, training, logistical support and faster deployment of specialized capabilities. This is particularly important in mountainous terrain, where militant groups can exploit difficult geography, limited infrastructure and remote communities.

Greater cooperation can also help Puntland improve its ability to monitor militant movements, disrupt supply networks and coordinate operations with international partners.

The partnership has significance beyond counterterrorism. Puntland controls a long stretch of coastline along the Gulf of Aden, making maritime security an important component of regional stability. A stronger security presence in Bossaso could improve monitoring of coastal waters and support efforts against illicit trafficking and other maritime threats.

It could also contribute to the protection of commercial shipping moving through one of the world’s most important trade corridors. For Puntland, stronger maritime capabilities would provide security benefits while reinforcing its role as a regional partner in protecting the Gulf of Aden.

Why the Al-Khanadeq Report Matters

The Lebanese report is significant primarily because it reflects how closely outside actors are watching the military developments around Bossaso. Its suggestion that the facility could eventually be involved in operations connected to Yemen remains speculation. It should not be presented as evidence of an American plan to attack Yemen from Puntland. But the report does highlight a genuine strategic reality: Bossaso’s location gives the U.S. presence there importance far beyond Puntland’s borders.

Any significant expansion of a foreign military facility in such a strategically sensitive location will inevitably attract attention from regional actors, including groups hostile to U.S. interests. That makes intelligence cooperation and protection of the facility increasingly important.

The strongest case for the U.S. presence in Bossaso is not that it could become a platform for offensive operations. Its greater value lies in what it can provide before a crisis develops. A sustained partnership can improve intelligence collection, strengthen Puntland’s counterterrorism capabilities, enhance maritime surveillance and provide faster response to emerging threats.

For Washington, Bossaso offers a strategically located partner close to Yemen, the Gulf of Aden and the Bab al-Mandab corridor. For Puntland, U.S. support can provide access to training, intelligence and capabilities that would be difficult to develop independently.
