Mogadishu (WDN) – A public war of words has erupted between Somali police officer General Cabdalla Cabdalla and the Second Deputy Speaker of the House of the People, MP Abdullaahi Cumar Abshirow, after the two exchanged serious accusations on social media amid growing insecurity and escalating clan tensions in the Lower Shabelle region.
The dispute began after MP Abshirow reportedly accused General Cabdalla of inciting unrest in Lower Shabelle and warned that he could face arrest over his alleged role in fueling the conflict.
Supporters of General Cabdalla reject those accusations, noting that the general recently attended a peaceful public demonstration in the coastal town of Marka, where residents called for improved public services, infrastructure development, and greater government investment in the region.
The general is also widely recognized by his supporters for his role in military operations that helped liberate several villages from Al-Shabaab. They contrast his record with that of some elected representatives from the region, arguing that several lawmakers have rarely visited the communities they represent.
General Cabdalla dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and without foundation. In a statement posted on his Facebook page, he defended the people of Lower Shabelle, arguing that local communities have played a crucial role in supporting the Somali National Army’s campaign against Al-Shabaab.
“It is deeply regrettable that the people of Lower Shabelle are being portrayed as militias when everyone knows the important role they have played in defending the country and standing alongside the Federal Government’s security forces,” the general wrote.
He described the accusations against him as entirely baseless. The confrontation escalated when General Cabdalla made allegations of his own, claiming that individuals—including MP Abshirow and his associates—had previously worked covertly with what the Somali government officially refers to as the Khawarij, a term used for Al-Shabaab, and still sought to sow division between the government and the Somali people.
The general did not present evidence to support those allegations or identify specific incidents to substantiate his claims. As of publication, MP Abshirow has not publicly responded to the accusations.
Escalating Political and Security Tensions
The exchange comes at a particularly sensitive moment for Somalia. Lower Shabelle is experiencing renewed instability as government forces prepare fresh military operations against Al-Shabaab while several districts are simultaneously witnessing rising inter-clan tensions over land ownership, local administration, and control of territories reclaimed from the militant group.
Political analysts warn that inflammatory rhetoric from senior public officials could further inflame an already fragile security environment and undermine efforts to stabilize the region.
General Cabdalla has built a public profile through his participation in frontline operations against Al-Shabaab and his frequent commentary on national security issues. His supporters regard him as an outspoken advocate for stronger military action against the insurgency.
MP Abshirow, meanwhile, serves as the Second Deputy Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People, one of the country’s highest-ranking parliamentary positions, with significant responsibilities in the legislative process.
Calls for Responsible Political Leadership
The public exchange underscores the increasingly confrontational nature of Somali politics at a time when the country faces multiple overlapping crises, including constitutional disputes, tensions between the Federal Government and several Federal Member States, ongoing military operations against Al-Shabaab, and recurring inter-clan violence.
Political observers argue that disputes involving senior state officials should be addressed through established legal and institutional mechanisms rather than through competing accusations on social media, particularly when the country is confronting serious security challenges.
As of publication, neither the allegations made by General Cabdalla nor those reportedly made by Deputy Speaker Abshirow have been independently verified. No official investigation or judicial findings have been announced regarding the claims exchanged by the two officials.
With Somalia confronting simultaneous political and security challenges, analysts say public confidence will depend on transparency, accountability, and evidence-based public discourse rather than unsubstantiated accusations exchanged in the public arena.
