Mogadishu (WDN) – The United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) has welcomed the progress made in the ongoing political dialogue between Somalia’s Federal Government and opposition leaders, describing the talks as a positive step toward reaching a broad-based agreement on the country’s electoral process.
In a statement, UNTMIS commended the efforts of all parties involved in convening the negotiations, emphasizing the importance of sustained dialogue in achieving a political consensus on Somalia’s future elections.
The UN mission noted that the latest round of discussions, held in Mogadishu, took place in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, with participants focusing on building common ground and advancing mutual understanding on key electoral issues.
The negotiations, which have been underway in the Somali capital in recent days, are aimed at bridging differences over the electoral framework and securing an inclusive political agreement acceptable to all major stakeholders.
According to sources familiar with the talks, the discussions have made encouraging progress, although several key issues remain under negotiation.
The dialogue is being facilitated by UNTMIS, with support from diplomats representing the European Union, as well as the embassies of the Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States, all of whom are working alongside Somali stakeholders to help foster consensus and support a peaceful, Somali-led political process.
