Mogadishu (WDN) – Reports from the 13 August meeting between President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the Opposition of the National Salvation Council (Samato Bixinta) indicate that negotiations have collapsed after the president refused to abandon his contentious One Person One Vote (1P1V) election plan.
Opposition leaders rejected the proposal outright, though sources suggest some members within the bloc may be open to compromise, viewing it as an opportunity to secure positions within President Hassan’s administration.
The impasse coincided with President Hassan’s public registration under the 1P1V system on Tuesday, 11 August, in Mogadishu’s Warta-Nabadda District. At the event, he urged Somalis to “take advantage of this great opportunity to elect their political representatives.”
Opposition leaders accused him of stonewalling meaningful dialogue, pointing to his defiant slogan: “Loo joojin Maayo – We will not be stopped.”
President Hassan also defended recent constitutional amendments, stating they had been endorsed by parliament and regional administrations representing both member states and the public, before he signed them .
With talks repeatedly ending in deadlock, there is growing uncertainty over the future of these meetings, which so far have yielded neither consensus nor a clear path forward.
The opposition is expected to issue a formal statement outlining its position, which remains firmly at odds with Villa Somalia’s agenda.
