Mogadishu (WDN) – Drilling operations at Curad-1, Somalia’s first offshore exploratory oil well, are continuing despite challenging weather conditions in the Indian Ocean, project officials have confirmed.

According to sources familiar with the project, the Cagri Bey drilling vessel, equipped with a state-of-the-art offshore drilling rig and advanced subsea technology, has encountered strong winds, rough seas, and powerful underwater currents that have complicated efforts to maintain a stable position at the drilling site.

While the harsh marine conditions have slowed aspects of the operation, they have not halted the project. The drilling vessel continues to carry out exploration and evaluation activities at the Curad-1 well. Engineers involved in the operation say such weather-related challenges are common in deep-water offshore drilling and require heightened safety measures to protect personnel, equipment, and the integrity of the operation.

Curad-1 is regarded as a landmark project for Somalia’s emerging energy sector and represents the country’s first officially sanctioned offshore oil drilling campaign. Expectations remain high that the exploration could provide valuable insights into the commercial potential of Somalia’s offshore hydrocarbon reserves.

Initial drilling results are expected toward the end of 2026, with additional findings likely to emerge during the first months of 2027. If commercially recoverable oil reserves are confirmed, the discovery could mark a transformative moment for Somalia’s economy, opening the door to increased foreign investment, job creation, expanded government revenues, and long-term economic development.

However, officials have cautioned against premature speculation. As of now, no official announcement has been made confirming the discovery of commercially viable oil at the Curad-1 well. The final assessment will depend on the completion of drilling, geological analysis, and comprehensive testing, with definitive results expected between December 2026 and January 2027.

Until then, Curad-1 remains one of the most closely watched energy projects in the Horn of Africa, carrying both significant promise and considerable expectations for Somalia’s future.
