Mogadishu (WDN) — A disturbing killing of a Somali military soldier has sparked widespread outrage after footage reportedly captured him pleading for his life moments before he was killed in an alleged act of clan revenge.

The soldier, who was originally from Hiiraan Region, was reportedly pulled from a vehicle near the boundary between Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle and taken away by armed men.

What has intensified public anger is video footage in which the soldier can reportedly be heard pleading with his captors, saying: “Uncle, please don’t kill me. I am sick, and I am a member of the Somali National Army.”

The footage has generated strong reactions because it appears to show a frightened and vulnerable man appealing for mercy while identifying himself as a member of the national armed forces.

According to reports, the soldier was ultimately killed in what has been described as an act of clan revenge, although the circumstances and motive have not been independently established.

In the footage, the soldier makes other statements suggesting that he would not have travelled through the area had he known what awaited him.

His words have since become the most painful element of the incident: a Somali soldier, reportedly aware that his life was in danger, pleading with those holding him to spare him.

A Killing That Raises Bigger Questions

The reported killing raises serious questions about the persistence of clan-based violence and the vulnerability of Somali citizens—even members of the national armed forces—when travelling through areas where clan tensions remain unresolved. It also underscores the weakness of the federal government and its failure to bring security and stability to the country.

A man serving in the national military should not have to fear being identified, abducted and killed because of where he comes from.

If the killing was indeed motivated by clan revenge, it represents more than the death of one individual. It is a reminder of how deeply clan-based retaliation continues to threaten social cohesion and undermine the authority of the state.

The authorities must establish what happened, identify those responsible and ensure that the case is investigated through lawful institutions rather than allowing it to become another trigger for revenge.

The most disturbing question is not simply why the soldier was killed. It is how a man could plead for his life, identify himself as a national soldier and still reportedly be denied mercy. His death should not become another forgotten episode in Somalia’s cycle of clan violence. It should become a demand for justice.
