Somali Government Announces Killing of Senior Al-Shabaab Leader in Targeted Operation

Mogadishu (WDN) — The Somali government has announced the killing of a senior Al-Shabaab militant in a recent counterterrorism operation. In a press release issued by the Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), the government confirmed that the Gaashan special forces carried out a planned operation in the Sabiib area of Lower Shabelle, resulting in the killing of a high-ranking, though unnamed, Al-Shabaab commander responsible for orchestrating mortar attacks in Mogadishu.

The statement noted that the operation followed extended surveillance and intelligence gathering, a collaboration between Somali Security Forces and the U.S. as part of the wider campaign,“Six precision airstrikes were conducted in the Ceel-Hareeri area of Hiran region from afternoon through the night, eliminating 46 Kharijite militants, including key leaders”

The Federal Government of Somalia reiterated its commitment to dismantling the Khawarij network and restoring stability to recently liberated areas and regions under government control.

Al-Shabaab militants have recently escalated attacks against government forces, taking advantage of growing challenges within the Somali military, including widespread corruption and mismanagement. These issues have contributed to the group’s resurgence, particularly in Mogadishu and southern Somalia.
