Mogadishu (WDN – Tragedy struck Mogadishu’s Water Wells neighborhood this afternoon as armed assailants shot and killed Mohamed Hassan Hamud, widely known as “Maqas,” the Deputy Chairman for Social Affairs of the Sabiid district.
Eyewitnesses say the well-respected official was ambushed by two men armed with pistols at his residence. The attackers fled the scene immediately after firing, leaving the community in shock and mourning. Locals believe the assailants are members of the militant group Al-Shabaab, which has a long history of targeting civil servants and community leaders.
Security forces arrived at the scene shortly after the attack and have launched an investigation, though no arrests have been made so far. Officials from the Lower Shabelle regional administration and Somali federal authorities have yet to issue a public statement regarding the killing.
The news of Maqas’ death has sent ripples of grief through the Sabiid community, where he was regarded as a tireless advocate for social services and a voice for the voiceless. “He was always there for us,” said a tearful elder who knew him for decades. “This is not just a murder — it’s a deep wound in our hearts.”
As families shutter their homes in fear and whispers of renewed insecurity grow louder, one question hangs heavy in the air: how many more must die before safety returns to Mogadishu?
