Garowe (WDN)- A group of Puntland parliamentarians aligned with President Said Abdullahi Deni’s administration is actively pushing to revoke the parliamentary immunity of former Speaker and current legislator Abwaan Cabdirashiid Yusuf Jibril.
These pro-government lawmakers accuse Cabdirashiid of orchestrating political activities in the Sanaag region that threaten Puntland’s unity and territorial integrity. They argue that his actions undermine the cohesion of the state and warrant removal of his immunity to allow for legal accountability.
However, Puntland Parliament Speaker Cabdirisaaq Qaraaje has so far resisted calls to proceed with the immunity revocation. Despite persistent pressure from members supporting the president, the parliamentary leadership has yet to take decisive steps on the matter.
Separately, Puntland officials have previously accused Cabdirashiid of recruiting federal forces in the town of Badhan, whose salaries are reportedly funded by Villa Somalia. These forces are alleged to be carrying out activities that fall outside Puntland’s authority, raising concerns over federal interference in the region’s affairs. On the other hand, Cabdirashid is reportedly also involved in a Federal Government’s plan, orchestrating to select MPs for Sool and Sanaag from either Lasaanod or Badhan.
These concerns have been amplified by a statement made by Khaatumo leader Md. Candiqadir Ahmed Aw Ali during a ceremony in Lasaanod on June 26. He declared, “The entire Sanaag region will be integrated into SSC-Khaatumo. We are preparing for a conference in July, led by the Federal Government, after which we will hold general.
