MP Abdirashid Jibril Accused of Undermining Puntland in Secret Deal with Mogadishu

Badhan (WDN) – A storm of controversy is gathering around MP Abdirashid Yusuf Jibril, the former Speaker of the Puntland Parliament, who is now facing accusations of conspiring with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to destabilize Puntland from within.

In recent weeks, Jibril has launched a political campaign in Badhan, Sanaag region, advocating for the region’s incorporation into the self-declared SSC-Khaatumo administration — a move widely seen as a direct challenge to Puntland’s constitutional framework and territorial integrity.

However, reliable sources within Puntland’s political and security establishment allege that Jibril is on the payroll of Villa Somalia, tasked with executing a broader scheme to sow discord and weaken Puntland’s stance on federalism and autonomy.

“This is not grassroots politics. It’s a Villa Somalia funded agenda disguised as local mobilization,” a senior Puntland official told WDN on condition of anonymity. “His actions are in clear violation of his oath as a representative of the Puntland people.”

The accusations extend further — with claims that Jibril is actively recruiting federal-aligned militia in Badhan, allegedly financed and directed by actors in Mogadishu. Critics say this mirrors a pattern of federal interference designed to fracture Puntland’s unity, especially as relations between Garowe and Mogadishu have deteriorated following controversial constitutional amendments and unilateral federal policies.

A growing number of Puntland lawmakers and civil society figures are calling for Abdirashid Jibril to be expelled from the House of Representatives, arguing that his activities constitute a violation of Puntland’s constitution.

“He has crossed every red line,” said one legislator. “If need be, he should not only be expelled from parliament, but also face prosecution for conspiracy and sedition.”

While Puntland’s Parliament recently dismissed false reports of his immediate removal, insiders confirm that discussions are underway regarding formal disciplinary action.

Despite his high-profile defection, Jibril’s political weight in Puntland is limited, and observers believe his campaign is unlikely to gain meaningful traction.

“The good news is, the man has no real constituency in Puntland anymore,” said a political analyst in Garowe. “This is more of a nuisance than a threat — but even a nuisance should be addressed decisively.”

As Puntland continues to face mounting external and internal pressure, the case of Abdirashid Jibril serves as a reminder of the fragility of federalism and the lengths to which some actors will go to erode it from within. Whether through expulsion or legal action, many believe Puntland must act quickly to send a message.
