Kismayo (WDN)- Preparations are underway in Kismayo for a crucial political meeting on Dec 18, bringing together the regional states of Jubaland and Puntland, leaders of the Mogadishu-based opposition, and representatives from Non- State Actors (NSAs). The talks are expected to focus on Somalia’s deepening political crisis and pathways to ensure a peaceful and orderly transfer of power following the end of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s term.

Somalia’s political landscape has entered a critical phase, with no national consensus yet reached on the electoral framework that will govern the country’s 2026 elections. The absence of an agreed system has intensified tensions between Villa Somalia, federal member states, and opposition groups.

The regional states of Jubaland, Puntland and key opposition figures have openly rejected the federal government’s push for a one-person, one-vote election, arguing that prevailing security challenges make such a process unfeasible. They also contend that the proposed plan lacks inclusivity and was developed without broad national consultation.

With divisions widening and uncertainty growing, attention has now turned to the Kismayo conference. Many see the talks as a pivotal opportunity to break the political deadlock and forge a consensus on an electoral model capable of safeguarding stability and national unity ahead of 2026.
