Minneapolis (WDN)- U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar has won the Democratic primary for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, securing the party’s nomination and clearing a major hurdle on her path toward seeking a fifth term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
lhan is one of President Trump’s most outspoken critics, consistently pushing back against his attacks on her Somali heritage and immigrant background. She has become a prominent defender of her roots, confronting Trump whenever he uses his public platform to target her, Somalia, or the broader Somali-American community.
Ilham secured more than 80 percent of the vote in a decisive victory over her Democratic challengers. The victory reinforces Omar’s position in a heavily Democratic district centered on Minneapolis, where she has built a strong political base since first entering Congress in 2019.
With more than 95 percent of ballots counted, unofficial results showed Omar with 122,640 votes, followed by Julie Trang Le with 10,201 and Latonya T. Reeves with 9,131. Other candidates included Abena McKenzie and Nate Schluter.
Omar’s victory was particularly significant given that primary elections in heavily Democratic districts often determine the eventual representative. Minnesota’s 5th District is strongly Democratic and encompasses Minneapolis and surrounding communities.
A Dominant Primary Victory
Omar, a fourth-term Democrat and prominent progressive voice in Congress, defeated a field that included Le, a former federal prosecutor, and Reeves, a labor and political activist.
The scale of the victory left little doubt about Omar’s continued strength among Democratic voters in the district. Her performance also strengthens her position within the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, where she remains one of the most recognizable members of the group known as “The Squad.” The nomination puts Omar in position to seek another term in the November general election.
On the Republican side, John Nagel won the party’s primary with approximately 52.1 percent of the vote. If the results are formally certified, Nagel is expected to face Omar in the November general election.
The November contest will therefore provide another national political test for Omar, whose career has attracted considerable attention both inside Minnesota and across the United States.
Yet the political landscape of the 5th District remains strongly favorable to Democrats. Omar won reelection in 2024 with roughly 74 percent of the general-election vote, underscoring the challenge facing any Republican seeking to unseat her.
Omar’s latest primary victory marks another important chapter in a political career that has made her one of the most prominent Somali-American figures in U.S. politics.
If she wins in November, Omar would begin a fifth term in Congress, further cementing her place in Minnesota’s political history and extending the influence of one of the most prominent progressive voices in the Democratic Party.
For now, the primary result represents a clear message from Democratic voters in Minnesota’s 5th District: Ilhan Omar remains their preferred candidate. The next test comes in November.
