Baidoa (WDN) — Heavy fighting has erupted inside Baidoa, transforming the capital of South West State into the latest and most dramatic flashpoint in Somalia’s deepening political and security crisis.
The clashes are reportedly pitting forces loyal to former South West State President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed “Laftagareen” against forces aligned with the Federal Government of Somalia and supporting the administration led by Aden Mohamed Nur (Aden Madoobe).

The intensity of the fighting has stunned residents, with reports of heavy gunfire and powerful explosions reverberating across different parts of the city.
A spokesman for the Southwest administration aligned with Laftagareen claimed that his forces had captured parts of Baidoa, describing the operation as a “liberation struggle” and calling on residents to support the forces carrying out the offensive.
A spokesman for Laftagareen’s forces also warned that troops deployed from Mogadishu would suffer defeat, referring to the expected confrontation as “Salbalaar.” The claims could not be independently verified.
Meanwhile, residents reported sustained exchanges of heavy weapons and explosions in several areas of the city, underscoring the seriousness of the confrontation and the rapidly deteriorating security situation.
Federal Government forces supporting the administration headed by Aden Madoobe are reportedly continuing to resist the assault.
The battle has placed Baidoa at the center of an increasingly dangerous confrontation in which political disputes over leadership and legitimacy have spilled directly onto the streets.
Neither the Federal Government nor the administration led by Aden Madoobe has issued a detailed official statement confirming the latest developments or providing verified information on casualties, territorial changes or the scale of the fighting.
A City Caught in a Political Storm
For now, Baidoa remains tense, with conflicting accounts emerging from the battlefield and independent verification proving difficult.
The fighting represents more than another armed confrontation in Somalia. Baidoa is the political and administrative heart of South-west State, and any prolonged battle for control of the city could have consequences far beyond its streets.
What is unfolding is therefore being watched with growing alarm: a political struggle that once played out through speeches, negotiations and competing claims of legitimacy has now erupted into open armed confrontation inside one of Somalia’s most important regional capitals.
As gunfire continues to echo through Baidoa, the central question is no longer simply who controls the city—but whether Somalia’s political disputes can still be resolved through politics before the battlefield becomes the country’s principal negotiating table.
