Deadly Clash Erupts Between Puntland and Maakhir Forces in Dhahar, Sparking Regional Tensions

Badhan (WDN) A deadly clash between Puntland security forces and Maakhir forces erupted in Dhahar, resulting in multiple casualties and further straining already fragile relations within Somalia’s northern regions.

The confrontation reportedly began when Puntland forces—including units from the Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF) and the Turubatariyo attempted to enter Dhahar. Their advance was met with resistance from Maakhir forces stationed at a military base in the town, commanded by Jama Ok. The Maakhir forces, who maintain control of the base, denied the Puntland forces entry, leading to an armed clash between the two sides. Both opposing forces are reportedly composed of fighters from the Sanaag and Haylan regions.

Local sources confirmed that at least 7 people were killed in the fighting, 5 from the Puntland side and 2 from Maakhir forces while 9 others were injured. Puntland forces also lost 1 military vehicle, which was captured during the confrontation.

The conflict remains unresolved, with no ceasefire announced and reports of military reinforcements mobilizing from Qardho, a key Puntland stronghold. Observers say the violence may have been avoidable, noting that Puntland forces could have approached the town through alternative routes rather than passing directly by the Maakhir base.

The incident has triggered a fresh wave of political blame. The Federal Government of Somalia and the Puntland State administration have issued dueling statements, each accusing the other of instigating the violence.

Puntland’s Minister of Interior, Abdinur Farah Juxa, condemned the Federal Government, saying:

“We strongly condemn the Federal Government for fomenting conflict, social unrest, and instability in Puntland using international funds. This undermines our efforts to fight terrorism and maintain order.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Ministery of Interior and Federal Affairs placed responsibility on the Puntland leadership:

“The Ministry calls on the Puntland President to stop fueling conflict and to withdraw the troops sent from Qardho, originally tasked with countering extremist threats but now redirected for political purposes.”

The escalating rhetoric and troop movements have raised concerns among local communities and international observers alike, as tensions in the Sanaag and Haylan regions continue to mount amid complex clan and political dynamics.
