Mogadishu (WDN) — Fresh violence in the town of Jalalaqsi in Somalia’s Hiiraan region between rival clans left multiple people dead and wounded, while entire neighborhoods were reduced to ashes in a conflict that has already displaced large numbers of civilians.
The fighting, which erupted west of Jalalaqsi, has exposed the devastating human cost of recurring clan conflicts in a region already burdened by insecurity, displacement, and economic hardship.
According to authorities, numerous homes were set ablaze during the confrontation. Many of the houses destroyed had already been abandoned by residents fleeing the escalating violence, highlighting the growing humanitarian impact of the conflict.
In a statement issued in response to the crisis, the Hirshabelle administration called for an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities, urging the warring communities to lay down their arms before further bloodshed occurs.
Officials also appealed to traditional elders, religious leaders, and community figures to intensify efforts to prevent the situation from spiraling further out of control.
As concern mounted over the deteriorating security situation, Hirshabelle announced the deployment of a high-level peace delegation to Jalalaqsi. The first mediation team is expected to arrive in the coming hours under the leadership of Hirshabelle Vice President Yusuf Ahmed Hagar Dabageed.
The delegation includes prominent political and traditional leaders, among them Khalif Abdi Omar, Deputy Commissioner of Buula Burte Libaan Abdi Burusow, and traditional elder Ugaas Ali Ugaas Mohamed Ugaas Sheikh Shafeeq, widely known as the Ugaas of the Seddex Omar community.
Notably, MP Khalif Abdi Omar and Deputy Commissioner Libaan Abdi Burusow are expected to represent the interests of the two communities involved in the fighting, a move aimed at building trust and facilitating dialogue between the rival sides.
The violence has also drawn reactions from national political figures. Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed expressed deep sorrow over the conflict and issued an urgent appeal for peace. “I send a message of peace to the brotherly communities fighting in Jalalaqsi district of Hiiraan region. I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and property resulting from this tragic internal conflict,” Sharif said.
The clashes come at a time when Somalia continues to battle multiple security challenges, making the outbreak of deadly inter-clan violence particularly alarming. While national attention remains focused on political disputes and the fight against Al-Shabaab, local conflicts such as the one unfolding in Jalalaqsi continue to inflict devastating consequences on ordinary civilians.
For many residents, the images emerging from Jalalaqsi are both heartbreaking and shocking: homes reduced to rubble, families uprooted from their communities, and brother turning against brother in a conflict that local leaders are now racing to contain.
The success or failure of the mediation mission expected to arrive in Jalalaqsi may determine whether the violence is brought under control—or whether another chapter of bloodshed is added to the troubled history of clan conflict in central Somalia.
