NAIROBI (WDN) – A devastating fire at an apartment in Nairobi’s South C neighborhood, has left a Somali family reeling after three young children lost their lives in the early hours of the incident.
The blaze, which engulfed part of the Huda Apartments building, reportedly began after an electrical device — believed to be a screen the children were watching — exploded, triggering a fast-spreading fire. The Somali family, who lived on the first floor, was caught off guard as the flames tore through their home.
Eyewitnesses and emergency responders say the children’s mother acted heroically. When the fire broke out, she discovered the rooms had filled with smoke and flames, with some of her children trapped inside. She managed to break through a window, rescue several of the children by throwing them to safety, and then leapt out herself. Despite her efforts, three of her children, who were in a separate room, could not be reached in time and tragically perished.
Police have identified the father as Ahmed Nur, a man who had only recently returned from Hajj, the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. The family’s grief is shared by a shocked community, now mourning the loss of innocent lives.
Speaking to the press, Nairobi Police Commander George Seda confirmed the cause of death was severe smoke inhalation. “The children were between two and five years old. Their bodies were recovered showing clear signs of asphyxiation due to the heavy smoke,” he stated.
The fire has raised renewed concerns over electrical safety in densely populated urban areas like South C. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, as residents call for greater awareness and preventive measures to avoid similar tragedies.
As the Somali community in Nairobi gathers in mourning, condolences have poured in from across the city and beyond, with many praising the mother’s bravery and calling for support to help the family rebuild after this unimaginable loss.
