Las Anod (WDN) – The administration of SSC-Khatumo has issued a firm warning to Somaliland following threats aimed at disrupting the anticipated visit of Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, to Las Anod.
In a press briefing, SSC-Khatumo’s Minister of Information, Najib Barkhadle, dismissed concerns over the region’s security, asserting that the area under SSC control is stable and fully capable of guaranteeing the Prime Minister’s safety during his visit.
“If we feared birds, we wouldn’t plant seeds,” Minister Barkhadle remarked, using a Somali proverb to emphasize their confidence and determination. He also called on the public to remain vigilant and support the local security forces during the visit.
The warning comes in response to Somaliland’s sharp opposition to the Prime Minister’s planned trip to Las Anod, a city that was once contested between Somaliland and SSC-Khatumo forces but is now firmly under the control of the latter.
Barkhadle accused Somaliland of attempting to incite conflict and destabilize a region that is currently experiencing relative calm after a protracted conflict. He warned Hargeisa to refrain from provocative actions or statements, stating that SSC-Khatumo is committed to peace and governance but will not tolerate interference.
The Prime Minister’s visit is seen as a significant step toward deepening cooperation between the federal government in Mogadishu and the SSC-Khatumo administration, which continues to function as an interim authority while rebuilding governance structures and institutions in the region.
Somaliland, which views Las Anod as part of its claimed territory, reacted strongly to news of the planned visit, warning Prime Minister Hamza that he would “regret” the move and vowing to take measures to stop it. Such rhetoric has been widely criticized as inflammatory by SSC-Khatumo officials and supporters.
The upcoming visit is expected to clarify the federal government’s position on SSC-Khatumo’s interim administration and its future within the federal framework. It also signals Mogadishu’s growing engagement with the region’s leadership following months of political and military tension.
